Diablo 4’s successful launch has been the talk of the gaming world in the weeks since its release. It broke sales records across the board in no small part due to its robust marketing campaign, where collaborations with Halsey, Megan Fox, and evenKFC have spread the word ofDiablo 4far and wide. However, none of these crossovers were as hands-on as A Greedy Emissary—theWorld of Warcraftevent that allowed players to collectDiablo 4cosmetics by hunting down Treasure Goblins across Azeroth.

Unfortunately, A Greedy Emissary is just about over. The Treasure Goblins are leavingWorld of Warcraft, taking with them all of their exclusive loot drops and leaving behind the Winds of Sanctuary experience and reputation buff. That said,World of Warcraftshouldn’t let A Greedy Emissary be consigned to memory. While all good things must come to an end, abandoning the event completely would be missing out on a golden opportunity.

Treasure Goblins Shouldn’t Leave World of Warcraft Forever

A Greedy Emissary was a great success. Chaotic packs ofWorld of Warcraftcharacters descended upon the poor Treasure Goblins by the hundreds, filling screens with mounts and particle effects. Players celebrated lucky drops and lamented poor fortune, exchanged duplicate items, and came together to work towards a common goal: getting loot.

While the event may have inconvenienced some fans, manyWorld of Warcraftplayers walked away with hilarious storiesabout portals and sunflowers, not to mention some fantastic cosmetic items. It would simply be a shame not to repeat this event in the future.

Luckily, there is precedent forWorld of Warcraftto do so. A Greedy Emissary wasn’t actually the first time Treasure Goblins have appeared in Azeroth. DuringDiablo’s20-year anniversary in 2017,World of Warcrafthad an in-game event where Treasure Goblins appeared in Legion dungeons, across the Broken Isles, or under Dalaran. Defeating a Treasure Goblin let them enter the Secret Cow Level and defeat The Cow King to obtain specialDiablo 4cosmetics, many of which returned as rewards forWorld of Warcraft’sA Greedy Emissary event.

World of Warcrafthas every reason to bring this event back in some form in the future.Blizzard crossover eventsare always popular among fans, andWarcraftandDiablogo together extremely well. Collectibles like Tyrael’s Charger and the Baal’ial companion pet are highly-coveted items, and having the chance to obtain them again in a few years would be appreciated by those who weren’t playing during A Greedy Emissary, or who otherwise had poor luck with drops.

Diablo 4has confirmed two expansion packsare already on the way, either of which would be the perfect opportunity to revive A Greedy Emissary in some fashion. Alternatively,Diablo’s30-year anniversary is coming in 2027. While still about four years away, there were six years between the two previousDiablocrossover events inWorld of Warcraft. If it didn’t return before then,Diablo’s30th birthday would be the perfect opportunity to have another collaboration, especially if it introduced new items for players to collect.

On the other hand, perhaps it is best for A Greedy Emissary to stay away for good. While fans made plenty of fond memories hunting Treasure Goblins, repeating the same event in the future might get a little stale, especially sinceDiablohas a rich history that can be pulled from to create new activities.

World of Warcraft’snext crossover with Sanctuary could instead have players meet major characters like Lorath Nahr or Deckard Cain, or let them face down the Prime Evil Diablo himself in an actual boss fight. With endless possibilities for the future,WarcraftandDiablofans can only speculate until the next time Azeroth and Sanctuary collide.
