Gamers had received tidbits of information from video gaming journalist Jason Schreier, and while none of it was official, Schreier’s track record has been trustworthy. The leaker took things a step further andleaked 90 videos ofGTA 6, much of which confirmed Schreier’s claims. The massive leak took the gaming world by surprise, and there were several theories regarding its source. It was eventually discovered that the leaker was a seventeen-year-old who goes under the alias teapotuberhacker and is part of the hacking group Lapsus$.
TheGTA 6hack triggered an FBI investigation, as the group was also behind a major Uber hack. The hacks revolved around the communication app Slack, which the group used to gain sensitive information. Currently, it appears that the group was motivated solely by financial gain, as theleaker attempted to negotiate a deal with Rockstar Games. The seventeen-year-old, who was one of the leaders, resided in Oxfordshire in the UK, and they were arrested by the City of London Police. The leaker pleaded not guilty to computer misuse. On September 24, he was back in court where he pleaded guilty to breaching his bail conditions, resulting in him being placed in a youth detention center. His current incarceration status is not known.
