Takashi Miike’s 2003 Japanese horror movieOne Missed Callis one of the most well-known from the genre, but the 2008 remake isn’t much to write home about. The original film did well at the box office, grossing more than $16 million. While the remake made even more money and grossed over $45 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, it is one of the most unpopular 2000s horror movies.

Remaking a film is always a gamble. If too many elements are exactly the same as the original, that is undoubtedly boring. If the new movie strays too far from the original, though, that can be a problem as well. There are many reasons why the J-horror remakeOne Missed Callhas received so many negative reviews.

While curses are always a smart horror storytelling device and often result in someterrifying horror movie demons, this remake misses the mark. The curse at the heart of the story is the only interesting thing about the film. The premise ofOne Missed Callis that someone will get a phone call and it will be their self from the future, explaining their time of death.
