Project Rene is on the Way
The next installment inThe Simsfranchise is codenamed Project Rene. Not much is known about it yet, though Maxis has revealed that it will have a multiplayer element and that it will live alongsideThe Sims 4instead of replacing it. This brings into question whether the franchise is taking a whole new direction or ifthe secret project isThe Sims 5like fans have been waiting for.
Project Rene has been subject to a few leaks, with some pleasing fans and others leaving them upset. It appears the game will retain its cartoonish style and willmake use of Denuvo. In addition to Project Rene, fans have also caught a glimpse of job adverts for Project Dolores which adds even more mystery concerning what Maxis is up to. It is not known whether Project Dolores has anything to do withThe Sims, though it sounds like another life simulation game based on the job description.
Is The Sims Receiving a Movie?
News of aSimsmoviestretches as far back as 2007. The film rights were purchased by 20th Century Fox, but after years of development hell, the idea was eventually scrapped. Fortunately, that was not the end of things. In March 2024, LuckyChap Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment reported that they would be producing aSimsfilm. Kate Herron (who directed season 1 ofLoki) will be serving as director and co-writer alongside Briony Redman.
How the Sims Movie Could Benefit Project Rene
For as long as there have been movies, they have been used as high-budget advertising mediums for other products. The same could be true for Project Rene andThe Simsmovie. The film could bebased on Project Rene, adding a metanarrative to the game.
Alternatively, the two could share marketing, timing the game to release around the same time as the movie. Of course, this all relies on the movie being ready by the time the game is released, but it seems that both media products are still in the early development stages.
What Would a Sims Movie Look Like?
No details have been released yet regarding the plot, but with a game likeThe Sims, the story could truly go in any direction. The film could explore the life of a Sim trying to achieve their ambitions and goals, or,like theBarbiemovie, it could provide a metanarrative about trying to be the perfect Sim.
