Based onSecret Invasionstar Ben Mendelsohn’s comments, those tired of the lighter tone and constant humor in many MCU projects are in for a surprise with the cinematic universe’s upcoming series.

Though much of theSecret Invasionplot has been kept under wraps, one of the show’s leads has hinted at the mature tone that awaits. “This is one the grownups can dig. It’s mental,” Mendelsohn, who returns as the friendly intergalactic Skrull Talos, toldUSA TODAYin a recent interview. “I hope it ends up being one of the coolest things that they’ve done.” Co-star Cobie Smulders, who reprises her role as Maria Hill, alsospoke ofSecret Invasion’s different tone, sharing this past December that it’s “really unsettling” and has “a really fascinating concept.”
Mendelsohn’s comments are not too surprising, considering the darker espionage vibe the firstSecret Invasiontrailer presented to fans and the glimpses of Jackson’s Fury rocking a more rugged look with his large beard and torn beanie, implying he has been through a lot, physically and emotionally. And coming off of thesuccess ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which in a way departs from its predecessors by featuring some of the most emotional and grimmest scenes in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe,Secret Invasion’s mature storyline may just be what the MCU needs more of and what fans are craving. But regardless of the tone, the quality of the storytelling will make or break this ongoing universe.
