After the launch ofPokemon ScarletandViolet, rumors started swirling that DLC would feature the Kalos region. Theories seemed to make sense, hinging on what appeared to be several hints withinPokemon ScarletandViolet’s plot as well as the real-world proximity between France and Spain. However, The Pokemon Company instead revealed the games will be receiving a DLC set called The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero in two parts. Although it will visit new locations, none of these appear to be in Kalos. Still, this does not completely crush the dream of Kalos playing a role in upcoming DLC, and that’s thanks to Terapagos.

From what has been revealed about one of the next new Legendary Pokemon, it has a general premise that may parallel Xerneas'.Xerneas is a Legendary creature introduced inPokemon X and Y, the games set in Kalos, and if there is a connection between these Pokemon it could be the bridge that brings closure toXandY’s story.

Terapagos, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Giant Turtle

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero has been broken into two releases, with the first half - The Teal Mask- set to release in spring 2023. The new adventure will have players exploring Kitakami, which takes inspiration from Japan. Thesecond half of the DLC is The Indigo Disk, hitting stores in winter 2023, during which players will journey to Blueberry Academy.

One of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero’snew Legendary Pokemon, Terapagos, is a large blue turtle with a very colorful shell and fur hanging behind it. If one looks carefully, there are eighteen pentagons on its shell that include the symbols for all the Pokemon types currently featured in the series, alongside a central symbol that seems to represent Terastallization. Although not much is known about The Indigo Disk in terms of narrative, it is clear that Terapagos should shed light on the Terastal phenomenon and its interactions with Pokemon typings.

Terapagos and Xerneas May Have a Deeper Bond

Xerneas is instantly recognizable thanks to its cervine appearance and marvelous horns that feature all seven colors of the rainbow (taking on a particular glow after using the move Geomancy). The colorful Legendary Pokemon represents life, whereas its Dark-type counterpart, Yveltal, represents death and destruction. Hence, while Yveltal drains the life force of its victims, Xerneas can resurrect them. This mirrors the mythology they are based on, as Yveltal has parallels with the Celtic death-god Morrigan while Xernas may be inspired by the life-giving Celtic mythological figure Cernunnos.

Like Xerneas,Terapagos may have mythological originsthat involve life-giving elements. It resembles the World Turtles found in various mythologies, including Hinduism, which tend to be associated with life because they support the world and all its inhabitants on their backs. If Xerneas and Terapagos indeed share a connection through the powers of a lifeforce that also define the series' typings, it might not be the end for fans who hope to finally find closure aroundPokemon X and Y.

Pokemon X and Ywere strange titles, as there was no third entry to wrap up loose threads around monsters like Zygarde - who instead featured inPokemon SunandMoon. Fans have often wondered whether Game Freak will ever revisitKalos and stories around enigmatic characters like AZ. With the upcoming DLC forScarletandViolet, Terapagos may form a connection between the two distant Pokemon generations that also make good on their real-world geographic proximity.

Pokemon ScarletandVioletare available now on Nintendo Switch.
