ThePokemonfranchise’s transition to a 3D style of visuals and exploration has proven very successful, but many game players long for the 2D stylePokemonstarted with. That’s one of the reasons VEWO Interactive decided to makeNexomon, a creature collecting and battling RPG. The 2017 release ofNexomonproved successful, leading VEWO to quickly start working on the game’s sequel,Nexomon: Extinction. And now that sequels release date is revealed and quickly approaching.
According to a newly released trailer forNexomon: Extinction, thePokemon-like gamewill be launching on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One starting August 28. Nexomon: Extinctionwill offer a total of 300 unique Nexomon creatures to trap and tame, each with abilities stemming from 11 different elemental types. Nexomon also have evolutions, just like inPokemon, but everything isn’t exactly the same. For example, players will get to choose from one ofnine starter Nexomonat the start of the game, and catching Nexomon isn’t as easy as throwing a Pokeball, but rather involves choosing a specific food that the Nexomon likes.
Nexomon: Extinctionalso offers a classic, but not wholly derivative 2D experience. It doesn’t feature pixelated orsprite-based graphics, for example. The overworld features a unique style of cartoon design and color, while the battles do feature 3D models for Nexomon, but otherwise a 2D fight.
For those who aren’t familiar with the franchise, the originalNexomonwas released in 2017 as a mobile exclusive. It proved to be both very popular and very well-received. VEWO is taking the opportunity while it presents itself to expand onto PC and consoles, rather than continue the franchise on mobile.Nexomon: Extinction’s launchshould provide a great frame of reference moving forward.
VEWO moved from mobile to core platforms not making any particularly meaningful steps forward from the original game. As such,Nexomon: Extinctionwill have some noticeable areas where improvements are necessary, such as the menu systems.Nexomon: Extinctiondelivers a solid-lookingclassicPokemonexperience, but not necessarily a perfect one. It’s a young franchise after all and getting better all the time.
