The fate of Osiris inDestiny 2is uncertain. After years as an outcast of the Last City, he returned for a short period and a reunion with his love, Saint 14. However, in a couple of moments it was all ripped away when Osiris’ Ghost, Sagira, was killed. After that, the fate of Osiris begins to get murky inDestiny 2as the wrath of the Hive God of War, Xivu Arath, is unleashed upon the solar system and Savathun weaves her most deceptive tapestry yet.

While Savathun swears she’ll return Osiris to the Last City upon the exorcism of her Worm, she may be lying. A lot of the story inSeason of the Lost sets upThe Witch Queen, but is still determined by how much each of the major parties in the solar system trust Savathun. This is complicated by her deceptive ways, which have led to incredible harm in the past at the cost of innumerable lives. Even though she might be the Vanguard’s best bet for recovering Osiris, it’s also clear there is almost no circumstance in which Savathun can be believed.

Osiris' Death in Destiny 2

Under any other circumstance, the reveal at the beginning of Season of the Lost that Osiris was Savathun in disguise would point to his death. Without a Ghost, Osiris is on his last life, putting the curious and intuitive Warlock at the mercy of the Darkness and its agents. This is a death sentence for most Guardians, and Osiris’ significance to the story doesn’t make him an exception. This is made even more heartbreaking as players contemplateOsiris’ and Saint’s future together inDestiny 2if the Witch Queen upholds her promise.

As encouraging as it is to think the two Guardians will be reunited withthe launch ofThe Witch Queen, there’s also the possibility they won’t. Osiris was deep in Hive territory when Sagira died, and even though Savathun claims to have saved him from the clutches of Xivu Arath, she may be lying to push her agenda. This could be backed up not only by Savathun’s past actions, but also new bits of lore released throughout Season of the Lost.

The third chapter from the lore bookRipples, “Risen from Bones,” follows Kelgorath - a bane to the solar system. While playing a lesser role than the High Celebrant from Season of the Hunt, Kelgorath is still an Ascendant Hive capable of surviving death. The chapter follows the Hive Knight as he swears fealty toXivu Arath the God of War.

This event was marked by his killing of a skilled Guardian and their Ghost. While the Guardian and the Ghost’s name goes unmentioned, given the happenings around Osiris players may have been misled. Pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes might not be appreciated by fans, but it fits withSavathun’s lore inDestiny 2. The Hive Goddess is an expert manipulator and no stranger to getting what she wants. Yet Given players don’t see Sagira die, there’s a possibility that Osiris and Sagira’s killer differs from what Guardians have been told.

Osiris May Be Alive in Destiny 2

One of the most significant clues that Osiris is alive comes from the lore tab connected to the Wolftone Draw bow. Here Osiris’ point of view while Savathun impersonates him is given to fans. Players are able to get the Warlock’s reaction as Savathun interacts with different characters inDestiny 2,including his lover Saint 14 andthe Warlock Vanguard Ikora Rey. It seems fair to say that if the Guardian is alive, his existence at the time was tied to Savathun in some way.

The way Savathun impersonates Osiris isn’t fully disclosed when players discover this is happening, but Wolftone Draw’s lore implies he’s somewhat aware of his circumstances. Even though Osiris' consciousness drifts in and out in certain situations, he’s able to see the Witch Queen move about the Last City and the Tower. This could mean that while Savathun was impersonating him she was inside Osiris’ actual body, subduing his consciousness, or she may have been able to link to Osiris through other psychic means.

Osiris' fate following this time isn’t necessarily secure, however. There has been no real progress made on locating him despite Saint 14’s efforts, which circles back to the unclear future that his character has. While theSpoiler Alert sidearm hints at multiple deathsit doesn’t have to be a direct reference to Osiris. If alive, Osiris could yet be saved, but that fact rests on whether Savathun has been telling the truth.

Believing the Witch Queen leading up to an expansion named after her is increasingly difficult. She’s already spent the better portion of a year misleading players throughout the different seasons in Year 4, and will soon be the primary antagonist for fans to worry about. At best, if Savathun was telling the truth and Osiris is alive, the Warlock is still in danger and without his Ghost. If she was lying then almost every major character inDestiny 2has been actively helping an enemybeforeThe Witch Queenarrives.

Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.The Witch Queenlaunches on February 22.
