Summary
System update 18.1.0 for Nintendo’s family ofSwitchconsoles has just gone live, removing several sharing options from the handhelds while also delivering some general improvements. The previous 18.0.1 build for theSwitchthat was released in April addressed a known network issue.
Launched in early 2017, the Switch has become one of thebest-selling video game consoles of all time, with Nintendo revealing in a financial report that it has sold more than 140 million units of the handheld and its variants. Details regarding a successor to the system are set to be announced before the current financial year ends in March 2025, but Nintendo’s support for the original Switch is still going strong.

The latest 18.1.0 system update for the Nintendo Switch line, which includes the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED model, went live on June 10. This build removed the “Post to Twitter” feature from the consoles' Album menu, and it also took out the option to link a user’s account to the social media platform. Moreover, the ability to link social media accounts from the Friend Suggestions menu has been removed, as well as the option to post screenshots taken in the popularSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, widely recognized as one of themost timeless fighting games ever made, from the Album to the Smash World app.
In May, Nintendo announced that it would discontinue integration with Twitter, which introduced major changes to how its API could be accessed in 2023. Twitter now reportedly charges up to $210,000 every month, or around $2.5 million per year, for access to the social media platform’s commercial-level Enterprise tier.Sony disabled Twitter integrationfor the PS4 and PS5 last November, while Microsoft made the same choice for its Xbox consoles earlier.
Nintendo’s previous 18.0.1 system update for the Switch family fixed an issue that caused wireless access points to become undetectable for some users who tried to set up a new network. Much like this past build, the most recent update for the Switch implemented general system stability improvements that aim to enhance the console’s user experience, but these changes were not specified. Despite launching over seven years ago, Nintendo’s handheld still exhibits some issues, like abattery problem that can make a Switch unplayableor the dreaded stick drift issue that is prevalent in Joy-Con controllers.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa previously confirmed that his company would make an announcement regarding the Switch’s successor, commonly referred to as the Switch 2, within this fiscal year. The upcoming console will not be mentioned in June’s Nintendo Direct, added the executive, who stated that the event will instead focus on the titles that will come to the originalSwitchin the latter half of 2024.
