When players think about an MMO,Amazonisn’t always the first thing that comes to mind. However, Amazon and its MMONew Worldis slowly taking the world by storm with its unique take on a historical fantasy game. And unlike typical MMOs,New Worldhas quite a refreshing take in terms of aesthetics and gameplay that can become quite inviting to new players.

Builds in New World

However, as with any MMO, it’s unsurprising for new players to commit some basic mistakes that can ruin their first impressions of a game. Thankfully, there are ways players can maximize their first playthrough to really enjoy theirNew Worldexperience.

10Focusing Too Much On Character Builds

Instead of having particular “Classes,”New Worldhas two general skill sets, one for Trade Skills and the other for Weapon Skills. As the names imply, Trade Skills let players focus on acquiring resources (Gathering), transforming them into crafting materials (Refining), and actually crafting items (Crafting). Likewise, Weapon Skills let players access various spells and attacks throughthe weapons they wield.

With these in mind, players shouldn’t necessarily worry too much about the kind of build they want on the get-go. Rather, they are free to explore the world as they wish and find a playstyle they’re comfortable with. For instance, a character can become a Magic-oriented miner, and they use spells to protect themselves from monsters in mines.

9Ignoring Attributes For Combat

While players can perfectly choose the kind of playstyle they want, they shouldn’t ignore the opportunities to optimize their builds based on the weapons they prefer. to maximize the opportunities of their weapons to perform in combat, they need to invest in the right Attributes to do so. In order to do this, they need to level up and properly spend the two Attribute Points each level-up provides.

Similar to other MMOs, each Attribute corresponds to improving the way a weapon works or functions in combat. For instance, Strength focuses on hard-hitting weapons such as the War Hammer, whereas Bowsand Muskets need Dexterityto increase their potency. Likewise, Intelligence is required to ensure magical weapons perform as intended. While any player can use any weapon inNew World, forgetting about how Attributes affect them will make weapons next to useless.

8Focusing Solely On A Single Weapon

WhileNew Worldallows players to just focus on one weapon for their journey, it’s not necessarily a good option to take considering the breadth of content the game offers. Instead of players just focusing on a War Hammer to bash their opponents, it helps to at least be proficient in multiple weapons to deal with most situations.

Ideally, players might want to excel in at least one kind of melee weapon and a ranged weapon. That way, they can deal with opponents wherever they may come from. If players want to be more specific, players might even want to focus on a separate one-hand and two-hand melee weapon, so they can have instances of switching to a shield build if they need a more defensive stance in combat. Separately, players can also focus on a magic-based build to deal aspecific kind of damage.

7Skipping Out On Health And Mana

While any player can choose to fight with any weapon inNew World, blatantly ignoring growth in terms of Health and Mana can be a dangerous precedent. Players might have the best weapons and the best skillset, but having poor Health and Mana means they won’t last in dungeons for very long. To avoid this, players need to make ample time to invest in Focus and Constitution as well.

As the names imply, Focus is all about Mana, with each point invested boosting its recovery rate and even the healing acquired via the Life Staff. Likewise, Constitution increases the player’s overall Health, allowing them to tank more damage in combat.

6Ignoring Weight And Encumbrance

Weight is actually an important element inNew World, unlike in other MMOs, especially since this time around Weight actually affects how players perform in actual combat. At its core, items in the inventory all have Weight, including Equipment. As such, a player’s playstyle may differ depending on the weapons and equipment they have on them. For instance, players that love an axewill likely benefit from heavy armor.

For instance, light armor allows players to deal 20% more damage and have more room for evasive maneuvers. In terms of medium armor, players only deal 10% more damage and receive 10% fewer cooldowns at the cost of a smaller evasion window. Lastly, heavy armor gives little room for evasion and even deals less damage, but this time has 20% less cooldown and boosted block chance.

5Ignoring Tool Upgrades And Improvements

Thanks to the game’s tutorial, players will get easy access to the tools they need to accomplish most Trade Skills in the game. These include basic tools for smithing, smelting, and even harvesting materials. Thing is, for players that want to focus on just bashing opponents, why even care for these tools, right?

However, what players easily forget is that they’ll likely be depending on these same tools when it comes to their level progression. Upgrading these tools and even replacing them with higher-tier versions will boost the processes of the skills the tools are used for, allowing players to maximize their time and output, unlike when they were just reliant on basic tools.

4Skipping The Trading Post

Players might be surprised to see the very few - if nonexistent - vendors inNew World. This is quite unlike other MMOs that usually have in-game NPCs that act as merchants and vendors for easy trading. That’s becauseNew Worldpushes for an in-game economy run by players themselves - meaning players need to get into the Trading Post and sell their items or buy the ones they need from others.

Thankfully, Trading Posts are easily located in settlements, as they’re alwaysnear the player’s Storage Shed. Instead of just hoarding items players want to throw away, they can try and make a quick buck in the Trading Post. And if players take the time and effort, they might just be able to know how to buy and sell goods properly with the Trading Post to earn money.

3Finding A Faction Immediately

Given the player-driven economy ofNew World, it’s easy for players to be engrossed with the idea offinding a Factionon the get-go. After all, players just need to finish the “Commitment to the Cause” story to join one, and there are a lot of benefits when in one. For instance, players can only join Companies in the same Faction, and it’s only within a Faction that players can toggle on their PVP.

However, players should not necessarily hurry to find a Faction if they don’t feel like joining one immediately. For instance, players who don’t want to deal with the pressure of PVP may choose not to join a Faction. Likewise, players can only join a Faction once every 60 days, meaning they need to choose a Faction carefully before joining one.

2Skipping Out Camp

Players who exploreNew Worldmight notice the option to make Camp out in the wilderness, but they might realize they couldn’t make one immediately. This is because they need to unlock the ability to Camp inan earlier quest. However, players shouldn’t skip this one as Camp provides a lot of benefits for players. Aside from being upgradeable, Camp is the best place in the wilderness for players to craft tools and items. Most importantly, Camp acts as a player’s respawn point when dealing with tougher foes.

Considering that mounts aren’t a thing inNew World(yet?), it would help for players to have Camps scattered wherever they travel across the map. This allows them to respawn in a Camp instead of a faraway Inn if they die.

1Hemp Is Wealth

Pun aside, players shouldn’t justfocus on rarer materialsand resources for the sake of immediately refining rarer materials and crafting more powerful items. For beginners, even the most common materials can become a godsend in level progression. In the case of gatherers, hemp might literally just be wealth. Hemp is one of the most common herbs out there, with players outright skipping them in favor of other unique materials.

However, players shouldn’t skip out on hemp in the early game, especially since it allows them to craft several useful items early on. For instance, hemp is the resource needed to make basic clothes for defense and even fishing lines for early resource gathering.
