A newBattlefieldgame typically comes out every other year or so, but 2020 won’t see a new game in the long-running first-person shooter franchise. However, it’s now been confirmed by DICE that a newBattlefieldgame will launch at some point in 2021, and what’s more, it’s going to be developed for next-generation consoles.
DICE made this announcement shortly after it confirmed that thenext content updates forBattlefield VandStar Wars Battlefront 2would be their last. With DICE ending its support for those games in terms of new content updates, it will be able to focus entirely on its next project, which is the next-generationBattlefieldgame. Details on what the newBattlefieldgame will entail are scarce beyond that it will be for next-gen platforms, presumably meaning the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Of course, the newBattlefieldwill likely come out on PC as well, and there’s also a chance that it could be a cross-generation game. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X are expected to have cross-gen titles for the first couple of years they’re on the market, though that largely depends on whatDICEplans to do with the newBattlefield. There’s a chance that the game simply won’t be able to run on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
When the newBattlefieldgame does launch, it will be interesting to see what time period it’s set in.Battlefield 1was set in World War I, whereasBattlefield Vwas set in World War II. However, bothBattlefield 3and4, games set in modern times, were hugely popular with players, so maybe the franchise will come back to present day. This would make sense, especially when one considers just how popularCall of Duty: Modern Warfareis right now.
Some of the rumors and leaks surrounding the nextBattlefieldseem to indicate that the series will indeed be returning to modern times. A leak has said that thenewBattlefieldwill have dronesof some kind, so if that leak is true, then fans shouldn’t count on a historical setting for the next game in the series.
It will definitely be interesting to see if any of the rumors surrounding the newBattlefieldgame are true. Other rumors claim that the game will be thelong-awaitedBattlefield: Bad Company 3, though that remains to be seen. TheBad Companyseries has been dormant since 2010, and DICE hasn’t really shown much interest in returning to it.
