InMortal Kombat 2, all the way back in 1993, Friendships were introduced as an alternate to the series' trademark Fatality system as a way to resolve matches without all the violence, blood, and viscera that had drawn the ire of parents. When NetherRealm Studios announcedMortal Kombat 11would receive a paid DLC expansion calledAftermathit was also revealed that theseFriendships would be returning for a few characters, and thanks to a tweet by Nintendo today, now the world knows Kung Lao will be getting one.

The tweet, which says Kung Lao “choo-choo-chooses you,” showcases a video in which the former Shaolin monk decides to end a battle not by cutting anyone’s throat with his razor-rimmed hat, but by using it to hold the wooden track for his toy train. While it’s somewhat ridiculous to watch the trained killer get down on the floor and play with toys under a banner of “Friendship” balloons, it fits right in with otherMortal Kombat 11characters like Kano starting up a barbecue with his laser eye.

While Friendships are one of the biggest upcoming additions to the game for being a sheer spectacle to behold, theAftermathexpansion will also include much more for fans of the game to enjoy. Among those additions is new story content and characters likeRoboCop voiced by Peter Wellerfrom the original 1987 movie.

TheAftermathexpansion is a rather big deal for NetherRealm Studios andMortal Kombat 11following what originally appeared to be its set path of simply adding new DLC fighters through Kombat Packs. New story elements that bring in characters from that first DLC Kombat Pack like Nightwolf and Sindel are big for fans of the fighting game, and those onPlayStation 4 will have a new dynamic themeto be able to capitalize on any excitement.

The game has a rather big fanbase already, which has been active since its release in March 2019 and subsequent porting to consoles like the Switch. Some of those fans have created their own content likefan art of rapper Vanilla Ice as Sub-Zero, and it should be interesting to see whether more new characters and mechanics like Friendships will expand that interest.

Luckily there is not a huge wait beforeAftermathreleases on May 26. It will cost$40 to get the expansion’s new characters and story, however, new stages being released alongside the DLC will be free for all players.

Mortal Kombat 11is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
