Mortal Kombat 11has been regularly updated with new characters, events, and even a major DLC pack since it launched over a year ago, and it appears all that work has paid off for NetherRealm. Today, Creative Director Ed Boon revealed that the game has sold an insane number of copies, proving just how much life the franchise has in it.

Over on Twitter, Boon stated thatMortal Kombat 11has sold 8 million units and counting, and while that doesn’t make it one of thebest-selling games of all time, it’s still a massive number of units sold for the fighting game. In fact,Mortal Kombat 11was one of the best-selling games of 2019, so it’s certainly still a heavyweight in terms of popularity and impact.

In addition to revealing the sales milestone, Boon teased that there’s more to come for the game, possibly hinting thatnewMortal Kombat 11DLCwill be revealed soon. It could also be an upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, a move that would ensure the game has a healthy player base until NetherRealm’s next game releases, whatever that may be. GivenMK11’s success, the idea of a PS5 and Xbox Series X port makes sense.

With so many copies out in the wild, it seems increasingly likely that fans will also get new character DLC, which has been a near-constant source of speculation. A recent leak hinted atRambo coming toMortal Kombat 11, in addition to other new fighters. Given that icons like The Terminator are in the game, Rambo doesn’t seem like an out-there addition to the game, though nothing has been officially announced yet.

Mortal Kombat 11,despite its success, has found itself embroiled in controversy for its microtransactions, which have become an increasingly hot topic in the last few years. However, they no longer dominate the discussion, at least whereMortal Kombatis concerned, as fans turn their attention to the future of the game.

Until NetherRealm reveals more, fans can only speculate as to what the future holds forMortal Kombat 11.It could very well serve as a platform for years to come, steadily expanding its roster and stages with new content releases.Fans have called forInjustice 3,which had been rumored to appear at DC FanDome, though it isn’t clear if that’s something NetherRealm is currently interested in doing, or if the studio’s next game will be something radically different from what fans have seen before.

Mortal Kombat 11is currently available for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
