Sonic Frontiershas been put under the microscope since its recent gameplay trailers. Fans have taken to social media to discuss their varying opinions of Sonic’s latest outing inSonic Frontierswith one popular YouTuber having less than positive feelings to express.
Sonic Frontierswas first showcased in May 2021 as a teaser in SEGA’s Sonic Central stream for the series' 30th anniversary. Fans wouldn’t be given many details on the blue hedgehog’s newest title until The Game Awards that same year when SEGA revealed the fact thatSonic Frontierswould be afully open-worldSonic theHedgehoggame.

Popular YouTuber Charles “MoistCr1Tikal” White has been quite vocal about his dissatisfaction withSonic Frontiers, claiming it looks like a “bootleg Sonic.” White expressed in his video titledNew Sonic Game Looks Horrible, that he believes an open-world Sonic game could work but thatSonic Frontierslooks like, “A fan game. But, at least with fan games, there’s passion. This just feels completely empty.” White would further claim that the title felt “soulless” and reminded the 27-year-old ofSonic the Hedgehog06,a video game infamous among gamers for its poor quality.
White would continue with his criticism, noting that the game appeared “slow” and “seems more like a tech demo than a game.” Over the course of Sonic’s 30-year-long history, the franchise has seen several hits and misses in the eyes of some fans with White noting that he believesSonic Frontierswill be “one of those misses” if the title goes ahead with its 2022 release. White explains that the title could be salvaged if it were to release in late 2023 or 2024, but only time will tell if SEGA does decide to go ahead with a delay onSonic Frontiers.
The claim White makes that stands out the most is thatSonic Frontiersappears slow. Speed and momentum are fundamental elements of Sonic the Hedgehog as a platformer. While we don’t know what the final product will shape up to be, Sonic being able to speed across open fields inSonic Frontiersseems to be something White would appreciate. SEGA did note previously that Sonic Frontiers skipped theseries' 30th anniversary the prior to ensure quality.
Sonic Frontiersis slated to release by the end of this year and fans continue to discuss their opinions on the footage we’ve been given andSonic could learn from other open-world games. SEGA has plans to continue with coverage ofSonic Frontiersthroughout the month of June and the coming year. It is unknown how viewers will react to later trailers of the title or if this game will make a splash withSonicfans.
Sonic Frontiersis set to release in 2022 on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
