Every day on the internet, folks find out things they never knew they needed. Such is the case ofBlight: Survival, a horror game set in the medieval era, which has gone viral on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube in the past week. The developer, Haenir Studios from Iceland, is run by only two people, and the game’s trailer has racked up millions of views on TikTok alone. In the wake of successful medievalindie gameslikeElden Ring, more developers are sure to explore the 14th century in an effort to endear themselves to gamers. A page forBlight: Survivalwas recently launched on Steam, although no information is presently available about a release date.
The idea behindBlight: Survivalis an eye-catching one. Everyone loves a good zombie apocalypse movie or game where they can play the hero, but in recent years, the category has suffered a hit because virtually all new movie releases were running the same plot with very little ingenuity. Merge the zombie apocalypse with the Middle Ages, however, and suddenly the cliché gets exciting.Blight: Survivalis going down a path that few games before it have even dared to dream of, but it has a blueprint with the internationally famousGame of Thronesfranchise, which joined the futuristic doom of the undead in the Nightwalkers with the heralded gloried kingdoms of eras past.Game of Throneshad the boost of an extra saucy mythical creature - the dragon - butBlight: Survivalcan take a leaf out of its books to create something remarkable.

Blight: Survival’s Gameplay Trailer Holds Promise for the Zombie Industry
The gameplay trailer contained much promise for gore lovers, asBlight: Survivalput on a five-minute showcase of grisly combat in the footage in the forms of 1v1 and sneak attacks.Medieval warfareis associated with gruesome details - losing limbs, sharp objects, and full-on beastly weapons of war - andBlight: Survivaldoes not shy away from this, much to the delight of gamers. The first footage in the gameplay trailer is a knight bashing their shield repeatedly into a blight-riddled zombie’s skull, producing sickening bone-crunching sounds of impact. Players can expect to run amok with their swords as they pretend to be skilled men of arms, running through hordes of zombies that rather unintelligently attack the player’s avatar one after another - as one would expect from these simple-minded creatures.
Haenir Studios intendsBlight: Survivalto be a four-player co-op roguelite and promises a large open map with lots of customization options in weaponry and armor. Players can gain inventory from the corpses of their slain enemies but would do well to beware of attacks from unseen foes, as all progression may be lost upon death. There seems to be an element of discovery in the game, as the knight featured in the gameplay trailer investigates a mangled fungus, and shortly after, a discovery notification appears. A mystery quest concept added to brutal fighting is a match made in heaven foraction RPGlovers, and the feature is sure to keep players coming back for more.
Blight: Survivalcould be the long-awaited breath of fresh air the zombie franchise has needed for a few years now, as it brings a nice plot shift to the “same old, same old” themes of survival against all odds. Most apocalyptic games focused on zombies, likeBack 4 Blood, take place in the modern era or even further into the future, showing the rapid devolvement of human civilization in the face of an undying enemy.
The zombie market has grown very saturated in a short time, and Haenir Studios could have the formula to put the genre back on track.Blight: Survival’smedieval settingis unique, and players are hoping they can claim outposts as their own in the game. If such a feature is present, it would fulfill the dreams of many who have fantasized about repelling an endless sea of undead enemies from their own base.
Blight: Survivalis currently in development.
