Summary
Over the last five years, Insomniac has proven itself to be a developer not only capable of making good Marvel games, but a studio that absolutely thrives at it. A massive undertaking with a ridiculous amount of pressure on its shoulders,2018’sMarvel’s Spider-Manhad some excellent traversal and combat mechanics, along with a story that walked the perfect line between familiar and new. Every single facet ofMarvel’s Spider-Manshowed just how much passion Insomniac has for the license, andMarvel’s Spider-Man 2only continues the trend.
Right now, Insomniac already seems to have quite a bit on its plate. A new game plus mode has been confirmed to be in the works forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, and rumors have started circulating about a potential DLC or half-sequel. On top of that, Insomniac also hasMarvel’s Wolverinein development, which is yet another major project with a lot of pressure on it. That being said, there could be room for more Insomniac Marvel projects in the future, and there’s oneSpider-Man 2sequence that proves that Insomniac could definitely handle a whole other type of superhero.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Proves That Insomniac Could Make a Great Hulk Game
Spider-Man 2’s Venom Sequence Shows Insomniac Can Do Big Heroes
From the momentMarvel’s Spider-Man 2was first announced, and Venom was confirmed to be in the game, fans started asking for him to be playable in the long-awaited sequel. The desire for a playable Venom remained a vocal part of the fandom right up untilSpider-Man 2’s release last month, and rather surprisingly, fans got their wish, albeit for just a short sequence.
Marking the start ofMarvel’s Spider-Man 2’s rather lengthy final act, players take control of Harry Osborn immediately following his reunion with the Symbiote, finally turning him into the big bad Venom. Players then get to control the hulking Symbiote as they make their way through Oscorp Industries, destroying everything and everyone in their path. Though the sequence only lasts for about 20 minutes in total, this rampage is expertly done, directly showing players how much of a threat Venom poses to the Spider-Men by letting players go wild for just a little bit.
In this sequence,Spider-Man 2really pushes its Teen rating, letting players execute some truly brutal finishers like snapping a guard’s back, and bringing down the full might of Venom’s gigantic jaws on a guard’s face. Insomniac also did a great job of making Venom feel like this huge hulking monster, giving each of his movements and attacks a great deal of weight. Every tendril smash and terrifying leap looks and feels exactly how fans imagine Venom to look and feel.
While there’s already talk of Venom getting his ownSpider-Man 2spinoff half-sequel, that’s not the only thing this sequence could end up paving the way for. This entire Venom gameplay section proves that Insomniac knows how to design large, hulking characters, and that makes the studio a perfect candidate for an Incredible Hulk video game. With regards to moveset, Venom and Hulk are actually fairly similar, albeit without the tendril attacks, so Insomniac already has some great foundations to go off there.
The biggest addition would be a more destructible open environment for Hulk to free-roam in, like a modernized version ofHulk: Ultimate Destruction, but again, Insomniac has already laid the groundwork, as destructible environments appear frequently in bothSpider-Man 2’s story and open-world gameplay. If Insomniac didn’t want to dedicate an entire game to Hulk, it could do a sort of team-up game, bringing together the Spider-Men, Wolverine, and Hulk, and giving them all different gameplay styles based on their respective appearances in Insomniac’s past and upcoming games.
