Insomniac is on an absolute roll these past few years, delivering hit after hit on a consistent basis with no apparent sign of slowing down. On the PlayStation 4, not only wasRatchet and Clankgiven a shiny new re-interpretation of the original game, but the studio also launched theblockbuster hitMarvel’s Spider-Man. Somehow, in between delivering a solid spin-off inMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Moraleswhile more than likely being hard at work on the next installment, Insomniac somehow managed to createRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart, due on the PlayStation 5 in little over a month.

But there is another series Insomniac is known for that many fans have been clamoring for since its last release.Resistancewas a premier title on the PlayStation 3, playing a pivotal role at the launch of that console, while continuing to show off its technical capabilities throughout the generation. Even though it has been years since a new game, with the series seemingly shelved, there may be hope yet for thisResistanceto rise once again. Whether its general speculation or references to the series made by Insomniac itself, there is a chance that Sony’s latest home console may be graced with a return from the iconic PS3 franchise.

Cryptic Tweets

Like any major company nowadays, Insomniac has a Twitter account in which the studio shares updates and general information regarding its upcoming games. Sometimes though, there are more lighthearted tweets posted to simply have fun with the community of fans, but there was one particular post that seemed so random that it had to be a hint.

After years away from the spotlight,Insomniac Tweeted about theResistancefranchiseon a few occasions last year, making fun little gags in relation to the series. Regardless of the tongue in cheek subject matter of these posts, the studio suddenly acknowledging the long dormant series, at the forefront of its social media page, is worth raising an eyebrow over.

Tease During Rift Apart Demo

The aforementionedRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartis quickly approaching, with its confirmed release date of June 11 just around the corner. To help further promote the game, Sony presented a newState of Play broadcastto showcase over 15 minutes of new gameplay footage and updates regarding the Lombax’s latest adventure on the PS5. While the focus was undoubtedly for Insomniac to demonstrate the impressive graphics and new features in this latest installment, there was a brief moment in which a sly wink to theResistanceseries may have been made.

Just a few minutes into the demo, Ratchet meets Mrs. Zurkon, a weapons vendor. During the conversation, Mrs. Zurkon makes reference to a ‘resistance’ to which Ratchet repeats the same word again, with added confusion. This can of course be seen as reference to matters within this game specifically, but considering Insomniac’s connection with the series and Mrs. Zurkon literally winking at the screen after this passage of dialogue, there may be something deeper being hinted at here.

Remake The Original Trilogy

Even if aResistancerevival is in the works, these sorts of business moves are a big undertaking and risk for a studio. Sales forResistance 3weren’t the best in the series, and the Vita spin-offResistance: Burning Skiesseemed to be the final nail in the coffin. However, fan support and interest has been alive and well over the years, something which Sony and Insomniac are surely aware of. In this age of remasters and remakes, perhaps that route may be considered the safer bet to test the waters and gauge just how much attention the franchise would receive on the PS5. While holding a special place in history, the PS3 trilogy (particularly the first game) are dated in multiple ways, something which can be remedied with afull blown remake on PS5.
