Summary

Back towards the end of December 2023, Insomniac suffered a major hack that resulted in much of its future plans being leaked all across the internet. According to this leak, Insomniac intends to keep working alongside Marvel for at least the next six years, with a Venom game allegedly in the works alongside anotherMarvel’s Spider-Mansequel, the already-announcedMarvel’s Wolverine, and perhaps the most intriguing title in the leak, a game focusing on theX-Men.

While Insomniac has stayed understandably silent in regard to the leaks, anX-Mengame from the studio would obviously have a great deal of potential. But nothing is certain in the world of video game development. In the last few weeks, a leaked trailer for a multiplayerMarvel’s Spider-Manspin-off hit the internet, one that’s supposedly already been canceled. But while this premise may not have worked out in the end for Insomniac’sSpider-Man, it might be the perfect option for its alleged upcoming X-Men game.

The Canceled Spider-Man Multiplayer Game Could Pave the Way for a Multiplayer X-Men

Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Web Explained

Initially announced back in 2021, Sony has been attempting to build its own empire of AAA live-service games, and things haven’t quite worked out the way it originally planned. The Last of Us' multiplayer spin-offhit major development issues last year ahead of its eventual cancelation, and Sony has decided to scale back its live-service plans significantly, cutting the number of in-development live-service titles by half. Though this hasn’t been officially confirmed at all, it seems as thoughMarvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Webcould have been one of those canceled titles.

Leaked as part of last year’s hack,Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Webhas just had two of its internal trailers released online, depicting a party of five Spider-People cleaning up the streets of New York City together, all whileYuri Lowenthal’s Peter Parkernarrates over the action. Aside from these trailers, not much else is known aboutSpider-Man: The Great Web, and unfortunately, it’s now unlikely that fans will ever get to see more from the game.

Insomniac’s X-Men Universe Would Better Suit a Multiplayer Game

Thankfully, it might not all be a loss forMarvel’s Spider-Man: The Great Web. While a five-person multiplayer spin-off might have suitedSpider-Man’s usual gameplay formula all too well, it could be the perfect choice for an X-Men game, with there seemingly being much more leeway for classic live-service components. First and foremost, anX-Men multiplayer gamecould put players in the boots of their own custom mutant, with their own unique set of abilities.

WhileX-Men: Destinytried this back in 2011, it failed to live up to its potential.

These custom mutant abilities could then sort players into loose multiplayer class archetypes, such as an attacker, defender, tank, and support, allowing players to form a well-balanced group of mutants that can then participate in missions across the globe, potentially with a similar general gameplay structure to the recently releasedHelldivers 2, where players would try to expand their reach across the planet. This could also lead to a faction system for the game, where players could choose to either be part of theX-Men or the Brotherhood of Mutantsand engage in a never-ending live-service war.
