For those who may not have noticed, Disney made some announcements the other day. Alotof announcements. Since Comic-Con and D23 couldn’t quite exist in the usual format this year, the company took advantage of their Investment Day Presentation to make some big news public. This included a bevy of new shows and projects, which of coursemeant a new slew ofStar WarsandMarvelrelated content slated for Disney+.

Two of those projectsare going to beGuardians of the Galaxyprojects. The lovable spacefaring rogues won’t be getting their own series, sinceGuardians of the Galaxy 3is still on the way, but they will be getting two small specials:I am GrootandThe Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The latter project has a release year of 2022, and the former has very little info available yet.

In terms of concrete details, there are a few things known about both projects. It has been confirmed thatThe Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Specialwill see the original cast return, and director James Gunn will even be returning to direct it. This is likely related to the fact thatGuardians of the Galaxy 3was originally supposed to hit theatersthis year, but will now be slated for 2023 instead after a long and complicated series of controversies and delays. In the meantime it’s nice to now that there will be some kind of showing for theGuardians of the Galaxyfranchise without fans having to wait a full three years for the next installment in the main movie series.

I Am Grooton the other hand will be a more casual affair. All that is announced right now is that it will be a series of shorts following Baby Groot as he meets and interacts with “several new and unusual characters.” The fact that he is Baby Groot at all likely means this takes place somewhere around the timeline ofGuardians of the Galaxy 2, since he has grown significantly since that film took place. Disney didn’t have much to say about these yet, but presumably they will be similar to the ones made for films likeToy Story 4, which were basically just short vignettes featuring a few characters from the film.
