Rockstar Games has officially announced theGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editioncollection, which bundles together remasters ofGrand Theft Auto 3,Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, andGrand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It’s a packageGrand Theft Autofans have been asking for over the past several years, and Rockstar is finally delivering. Of course, now thatGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editionhas been announced,Grand Theft Autofans are already asking for more.
Following the announcement ofGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, fans were quick to hit social media with hot takes regarding theGrand Theft Autogames that didn’t make the cut. It started with pointing out the variousmodern spin-offGrand Theft Autogamesnotably missing from the collection. A meme shared on Reddit by NightVelocity1 showsGrand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories,Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, andGrand Theft Auto: Chinatown Warsdrowning while Rockstar holdsGTA 3,Vice City, andSan Andreasabove water.

The memes escalated from there, naturally. IfLiberty City Stories,Vice City Stories, andChinatown Warswere drowning, then all of the classicGrand Theft Autogames had sunk into the abyss. Another meme from Redditor GoldenSaddle showedGrand Theft Auto,Grand Theft Auto 2,Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, andGrand Theft Auto Advancedown next to a sunken ship. At least the other titles are near the surface.
Behind the memes is a surprisingly popular sentiment amongGrand Theft Autofans. As exciting asGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition’s release is, it would be exciting to see the classicGTAgames re-released, too. A remaster of the original top-downGTAtitles made for the original PlayStation, or a collection of the mobile games developed by Rockstar Leeds for PSP, would likely have an excited audience waiting for them.
There is, of course, no evidence that Rockstar is making - or even considering making - a collection of any of its other games beyond the three classicGrand Theft Autoreleases in the new remaster. Fans can’t even get Rockstar to re-releaseBully,Grand Theft Auto 4, orRed Dead Redemption, after all, so these demands seem unlikely to be met.
Regardless, the enthusiasm surrounding theGrand Theft Autofranchise is palpable. For a series that’s subsisted on the success of a singleGTAtitle,Grand Theft Auto 5, for eight years, excitement forGrand Theft Autohas never been higher. Rockstar really could re-release the originalGrand Theft Autoat this point and have it be a staggering success, as these memes make it clear that fans want to see it.
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editionreleases in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
