At the endGenshin Impact’s Version 3.8 Special Program, HoYoverse surprised players with footage of the newest nation being added to the game: Fontaine. It’s the nation ruled under the Hydro Archon, and is primarily based on France, as Fontaine translates to ‘fountain’ in French. Known as the “Nation of Justice”, Fontaine oddly appears to be a mix of an advanced, technological society and a subaquatic environment. With a unique setting and distinct culture, Fontaine can potentially outdo otherGenshin Impactnations in terms of story, exploration, and even characters.

HoYoverse already revealed several characters from Fontaine: Lyney and Lynette during the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview, plus Charlotte during 3.7’s “Duel! The Summoner’s Summit!” event. Players are eager to discover more ofFontaine’s characters, but one thing they should consider is what kinds of non-human characters will appear in Fontaine. Just like how Liyue has the adepti and Inazuma has youkai, Fontaine needs their own special non-human characters to intrigue players.

Current Non-Human Characters From Fontaine

Interestingly, HoYoverse already revealed one non-human character from Fontaine already: Lynette. Judging from her feline ears and tail, Lynette seems to be another cat girl similar to Mondstadt’s Diona and Inazuma’s nekomata, Kirara. Much else isn’t known aboutLynette, but her sibling Lyneydoesn’t appear to have matching cats features at all. Kirara actually has a voice-over about Lyney, as she was amazed at his magic tricks to make things appear and disappear, questioning if he was a youkai like herself. It’s possible that he may be either hiding his cat features, is a different being from Lynette, or he’s just another human with powers.

Moreover, the footage ofFontaine from the Version 3.8 Special Programalso showed off a whole new character that seems to be a Fontaine officer. Alice refers to the little pink creature as a Melusine, a female spirit of fresh water. According to European folklore, a Melusine is supposed to be like a mermaid with a serpent like lower body, butGenshin Impactadapts the creature as a bipedal, fawn-like being with a tail and little wings. The pink Melusine doesn’t seem to be playable, but HoYoverse could create a character of the same species.

Genshin Impact Fontaine Street and Fontaine Underwater

Possible Non-Human Characters Hinted in the Fontaine Reveal

During the Fontaine reveal, there was a scene in which the little Melusine skips through one of the streets of Fontaine. Walking down the street appears to be a robot. Fontaine is known for being technologically advanced, yet not at a level like Snezhnaya, who’s known for developing the Katherynes in every nation. However, this robot looks unlike theRuin Machinesseen in the other nations, as it looks more humanoid rather than a huge, weaponized creature. It might be a security robot that patrols the city under the order of the Hydro Archon.

If HoYoverse were to get creative with Fontaine’s robots, one possibility would be to make a character that’s a machine. HoYoverse is already planning to release a robot character named Screwllum in their other game,Honkai: Star Rail, so it’s a possibility to do the same inGenshin Impact. UnlikeWanderer who’s a puppet from Inazuma, Fontaine’s robot character shouldn’t look a like a human, and it shouldn’t act too human-like. However, it should still possess its own personality and appealing design.

Lastly, to keep on with the animal-related non-human characters, Fontaine’s new underwater setting hints at a few possible character ideas. Like Ganyu who’s half-qilin and Tighnari who’s part-fox,a Fontaine charactercould be part of an aquatic creature. For instance, the fish, crabs, and rays shown in the reveal could mix with a humanoid body, likely as a mystical Fontaine creature. Also, the Oceanids are a species native to Fontaine, and it would be an interesting decision to have an Oceanid become a playable character, although it would likely take on a human-like form.

Genshin Impactis now available on Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
