It’s not often that radroaches can be considered a good source of loot, yet one incredibly luckyFallout 4player beat the odds to get an incredibly powerful weapon from this iconicFalloutfoe. Video games famously have that one enemy type to test beginner players with or to help introduce the mechanics of combat. The Elder Scrollshas mudcrabs,Diablohas the Fallen, and for theFalloutfranchise under Bethesda, that’s always been the radroach. Enlarged by mutation, radroaches inFallout 4are some of the easiest enemies that players can come across in the irradiated wastelands of the Commonwealth.

That being said, these critters shouldn’t be underestimated inFallout 4’s Survival Mode, as their speed and numbers can easily swarm careless players, especially if they happen to spawn as Legendary during the early levels. While the regular radroach may not have any noteworthy loot on its own, the Legendary Radroach draws from the same pool of Legendary Weapons as other enemy types do. As a result, it has the potential to drop an item with the same amount of power as one obtained from a Legendary Albino Deathclaw, though with far less of a hassle.

The stars aligned for aFallout 4player named bloodwolf28, who managed to obtain a Never Ending Double-Barrel Shotgun (and a level up) by killing a Legendary Radroach lurking in an abandoned house. While there are certainly morepowerful weapons inFallout 4further down the line, the Double-Barrel Shotgun is one of the best options for players during the early levels. Its Never Ending prefix also makes ammo obsolete, which should be another handy convenience to characters who are still starting out their journey in the Commonwealth.

Though other players commended bloodwolf28 for getting a lucky drop, they were also quick to point out that using VATS inFallout 4would have made it much easier to take down the Legendary Radroach than trying to aim at it manually. The tactical benefits of VATS cannot be understated, as getting swarmed by a group of feral ghouls can be nasty without it, and being able to get a few early hits on a Deathclaw is similarly valuable.

As most Bethesda fans anxiously awaitStarfield’s release in September,Fallout 76andFallout 4still have a strongly dedicated playerbase, andFallout 4in particular is being continuously supported by a plethora of mods, whether in the rank of gameplay tweaks or total conversions. Though it’s highly unlikely that radroaches will have a cameo inStarfield, one can’t help but wonder what the bullet fodder of the stars will turn out to be.

Fallout 4is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
