A recent rumor that claimedDying LightandResident Evil 7would be free games featured on the Epic Games Store looks to be false asCities: Skylineswas the first game to release in this 15-day event.
Epic Games has been keeping up with giving away a free game each week. Earlier this year, Epic Games gave away the newBlair Witchgame in October, and more recently,Pillars of Eternitywas listed for free. But now, like in years past, Epic Games is launching its Holiday Sale starting today. Not only can gamers purchase games for up to 75% off, but each day for the next 15 days, a game will be listed for free on the Epic Games Store for just 24 hours, but players get to keep them for good.

Epic Games kicked off the 15-day event withCities: Skylines, however, this is in contradiction with a recent rumor that claimed the first game to be featured would be Techland’sDying Lightfollowed byResident Evil 7tomorrow. According to this alleged leaker known by the Twitter name Apostle, the list features major triple-A titles, both older and newer releases, includingWitcher 3,Mass Effect Andromeda, andFallout 4. The release ofCities: Skylineinstead ofDying Lightis the first of a few reasons why this list looks to be false.
Horizon: Zero Dawncan also be found on the list further down, but it’s worth pointing out that, firstly, its PC release is likely too recent and it came from Sony. In fact,Horizon Zero Dawnis on this month’s list of PSN gamesfor PS4 and PS5 players. Secondly, the name of the game is misspelled on the list as “Down” instead of “Dawn.”
Additionally, every game that’s shown on Apostle’s list is a widely popular triple-A title whereas, in 2019, the 12-game list from the Holiday Sale featured somewhat smaller but still well-received games likeSuperhotandCeleste, which are both indie games. It’s likely that this list exists either just as a joke or clout, because this Twitter account doesn’t have much other gaming-related content.
While it would be neat to see these major games make the Epic Games Holiday Sale for 2020, this entire list is likely inaccurate. It’s not impossible that a triple-A title could release for free over the next 14 days, but players should keep in mind that most of the free releases in the Holiday Sale will likely not be mainstream games with a lot of hype around them.
Cities: Skylinesis out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
