Dwayne Johnson’sBlack Adamhas been delayed multiple times, and producer Hiram Garcia says the reason for the postponement can be attributed to the impact COVID-19 had on the visual effects team’s workload.

Black Adamwas originally slated to hit theaters on Jul 18, 2025, until the COVID-19 pandemic forced Warner Bros. to delay its release until July 2022. However, in March 2022, eager fans were once again disappointed when they learned theBlack Adamrelease date was delayedonce again, this time to October 2022.

During an interview with The Wrap, Garcia said the latestBlack Adamrelease date delay was because the VFX pipeline is jammed, a result of the productions that were shut down when the COVID-19 pandemic started suddenly resuming. “Obviously all these superhero movies just require so much VFX, and we’re just in a situation where the majority of the VFX houses are just completely swamped with work. I think that’s why you saw seismic shifts across the board, and you continue to see those giant properties just moving further down the line,” Garcia said. “And it’s just a matter of the vendors being able to accommodate the amount of VFX they have to do, the shots that have to be done.”

Director James Wan had previously said theAquaman 2release date delaywas also due to the extensive amount of visual effects work that needed to be done, so visual effects artists are clearly hard at work playing catch up. Garcia took note of that, expressing his gratitude to the VFX houses and promising fans fewer delays as the world slowly returns to normal. “They’re busting their ass and we’re so grateful for all those VFX houses,” he said. “It feels like things are starting to calibrate and I think you’ll start to feel less shifts down the line.”

For fans who enjoy superhero films, the special effects and imaginative worlds created by them are often a part of the appeal. That said, even some of the most ardent superhero film supporters have noted that sometimes, the quality of the visual effects doesn’t always match up with the imagination, so giving artists more time to perfect their work should be a welcomed decision.

That said, fans who are excited to see Johnson join the DC Universe don’t need to be too upset, asDC League of Super-Petsis now taking overBlack Adam’s July release date. Of course, the animated film starring Johnson as the voice of Krypto the Superdog is a decidedly more family-oriented adventure than the dark and serious-lookingBlack Adam, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t be enjoyed by the same fans.

Black Adamis scheduled to release in theaters on June 22, 2025.
