Dungeons & DragonsDungeon Masters have spent the last several decades flexing their creativity to tell exciting adventures to their players. While spoken word alone is more than enough to do so, some take the opportunity to use visual or auditory tools to add to the experience. Figures, music, maps, costumes, and more are all common tools of the DM trade. Sometimes a DM will go the extra mile inDungeons & Dragonsand invest their time into something particularly unique.

One great example was shared on Reddit this past week. Sentient_Fireplace made a post on Saturday with the title “A setup I did for the big dramatic reveal of my campaign! What do you think?” The post includes a short video featuring a drawing of a lighthouse just outside of a town, with the Moon large in the sky. They then spin a second piece of paper, and the Moon transforms into a humongous, multi-eyed monstrosity – the trueDungeons & Dragonsbig bad evil guy.

A short description of the situation from Sentient_Fireplace set the scene. They explain that their players' party has completed several encounters revolving around strange creatures attacking a town. The party then decides to rest for the night, the Moon bright above them. Much to the surprise of the party, the Moon reveals itself to be their enemy. TheDungeons & Dragonssessionthen ended, leaving players to consider what it really means to be facing the Moon.

The gimmick is a relatively simple creation. They took one piece of paper and drew their setting on it, with the town in the distance and the players' camp. They then cut a circle in the sky where their Moon would float. A second piece of paper was then cut into a circle and placed behind the first, attached via a small metal clip that would allow the back paper to rotate. They then slowly rotated their paper, drawing Moon-like shapes through the hole and then a face for their big bad guy. The result was aDungeons & Dragonspropwhere it seemed like the Moon was rotating to reveal its face.

Just two pieces of paper and some time investment to do some drawing was all it took for Sentient_Fireplace to create a visual tool that added something special to theirDungeons & Dragonssession. It’s nothing fancy, but it added to an important moment, which is exactly whatDungeons & DragonsDMsshould love to do.

Also in proper DM fashion, Sentient_Fireplace plans to deliver an increasingly exciting campaign to fight the Moon boss. They describe outfitting theirDungeons & Dragonspartywith equipment to survive on the Moon and then transport them there, where they’ll fight the evil infestation. As ever, creativity is at the heart of theDungeons & Dragonsexperience.
