Summary
Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness saga is coming to an end with The Final Shape expansion in February of next year, wrapping up almost ten years of stories and character arcs all tied to the fight for humanity and against The Witness. The finale is bound to be epic in some shape or form, and Cayde-6’s return might just be the testament to this so that players can see the story through while standing by the side of those who were lost along the way.Destiny 2’s The Final Shapewill be an end as much as it will be a new beginning, and the first release immediately after it is slated to make good on a promise Bungie made in the last few months.
Destiny 2’sSeason of the Witch reprised Crota’s Endas its Raid and gave players an all-out Hive theme, encompassing stories about Eris Morn, Savathun, and Xivu Arath. This is a great way to deliver seasons, and it’s likely something Bungie will keep on doing when the game switches to a new episode-based model, with releases spanning four months each instead of three. The first episode post-The Final Shape is going to be Echoes, and its accompanying image alone has a lot for fans to unpack.

Destiny 2’s Echoes Episode is Slated to Take the Vex Front and Center
Destiny 2’s episodic modelwill most likely shake things up for the series both from a gameplay and scale perspective, but more importantly, stories told this way will have to last longer and have a more powerful delivery. The first episode, Echoes, was revealed in the latestDestiny 2showcase back in August when Bungie unveiled The Final Shape, the future of the game, and more. Echoes' image features the outline of a seemingly human character with Vex armor, which alone raises questions and at the same time, gives a few important answers.
While the image is meant to look like a full-blown Vex at first glance, it’s clear that it’s actually a humanoid character, and that might very well be Osiris. The Warlock has always been fixated on the Vex, to the point that the entirety of the Curse of Osiris expansion back in thevanillaDestiny 2days was tied to his fight against the Radiolaria-fueled enemies on Mercury. As such, having him as the protagonist of the Echoes episode makes sense, especially considering that his clones (which could be seen in Curse of Osiris) are also called “echoes.”
More importantly, the image also shows jungle-like leaves, which could hint at the entirety of Venus coming back for players to explore, especially since Vault of Glass is already inDestiny 2. The Vex are closely tied to Venus, which was the original research point for Dr. Maya Sundaresh and her wife, Chioma Esi, in an effort to study the simulated realities of this species. With bothMaya Sundaresh and Chioma Esienjoying time in the limelight through Lightfall’s post-launch lore drops, there’s a chance that Osiris will have to trace the virtual signature of the former (MSund12) in the Vex network on Venus.
Either way, the Vex seem to be the main focus of the Echoes episode, and this is proof that Bungie is making good on its own promise from a few months ago when devs stated that the Vex would return to the spotlight after The Final Shape. Bringing Venus back from the first game would be a huge step forDestiny 2because it would be a nostalgia booster as well as the perfect occasion to delve into the origins of the Vex and maybe a bigger enemy for this faction - something more than a gargantuan-sized Minotaur, Harpy, Hydra, or Wivern.
Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
