In the lore ofDestiny 2, the Exodus Black was a ship designed to carry human colonists to a distant star system centuries before the Guardians came into being. The ship crashed on the planetoid Nessus, and Failsafe remained there alone for centuries as the crew was slowly picked off. The abandoned AI was left behind for centuries, and eventually developed a depressed alter ego that exists alongside an alternate, cheery disposition. The player finds Failsafe duringthe year one events ofDestiny 2, and afterward functions as a quest giver and world vendor.
But some eagle-eyed fans think they’ve spotted portents to Failsafe’s future in a new trailer gettingDestiny 2 players ready for The Final Shape. Fans have noticed that an element on the front of the Hazardous Propulsion armor bears a striking resemblance to Failsafe’s AI core that players address when interacting on Nessus. Plus, the armor allows Titan classes to fire “Exodus Rockets” when using their class ability, possibly related to the Exodus Black or the Exodus program. Players have concluded that all this could mean that Failsafe, or at least a portion of the AI, could be downloaded into the armor itself.
InDestiny 2, there’s a long, storied history ofGuardians using fallen enemies as weapons, but some Guardians are hoping this would be the first time a weapon or armor piece could talk back. This twist would take a cue from another notable looter-shooter, specifically the “Out of Body Experience” quest fromBorderlands 2. In this quest, the player helps a pacifistic EXP Loader robot that has shed its AI core find a new body. At the end of the quest the player has the option to put Loader #1340 into a shield or a shotgun, and will continue to speak with the player during use.
