After hundreds of hours of dedication, aPokemon Scarlet and Violetplayer has managed to complete their shiny living Pokedex.Pokemon Scarlet and Violethas 400 Pokemon, with 400 matching shiny variants, meaning that 800 Pokemon had to be caught and stored.
The Pokedex as a game mechanic opens a lot of player choice as seen when onePokemon Scarlet and Violetplayer completed their Pokedex before fighting any gym leaders, but most players just aim to “catch ’em all.” In the originalPokemongames, catching 150 Pokemon was an ambitious task at the time. The idea that there were so many unique creatures in one game was exciting, and the fact that they could be caught and kept was revolutionary. Twenty-seven years later, there are now more than a thousand Pokemon, making 150 seem miniscule. Of course, no game in the franchise has every Pokemon in it as yet, withPokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Mooncoming the closest at 807 Pokemon, which at the time was every known Pokemon.Pokemon Scarlet and Violethas under half of the roster of Pokemon, however this is doubled by their shiny variants, which in themselves are incredibly rare.Scarlet and Violethave an algorithm that determines that one in 4096 Pokemon will be shiny.

Considering this, it is all the more impressive that Reddit user, JonnyTsunami_, has finally managed to collect all 400 shiny variants. Hundreds of hours of dedicated work went into finding all the Pokemon, as seen in the screenshot that shows a play time of 285 hours. Another user commented saying that they are also completing a living Pokedex, and have gained 157 shiny Pokemon after 383 hours of gameplay. A living Pokedex, is a fan term for a game save which not only has a complete Pokedex, but has one of every available Pokemon stored in its PC boxes as well, often kept in their National Pokedex order.
JonnyTsunami_ also replied to a comment to confirm that there were a lot of unrecorded hours due to restarting the game. Another user commented to say that they have only 4 shiny Pokemon after 100 hours of play, while another commented that they have had trouble identifying shiny Pokemon. OtherScarlet and Violetplayers find that theirattempts to catch shiny Pokemon ends in heartbreak.
When all these factors are considered, along with the manyPokemon Scarlet and Violetglitchesthat may have gotten in the way, it shows that the time spent on the game isn’t the only dedication towards this milestone. Players continue to do amazing things with the games they love, it’s inspiring to see such great dedication put in by the fans.
