Allan Ungar, who serves as producer for theDeath Strandingmovie, recently spoke withScreen Rantabout its progress, and he had some optimism to share with curious audiences. “Yeah, no, listen, this is an incredibly, incredibly important undertaking for [Death Strandingcreator Hideo Kojima],” Ungar said of how important the project is to its creator. “This is his baby, this is the first time that he went out on his own as an independent studio, and made a game, and that game became critically acclaimed, it became very prolific.” Kojima’s creation of games likeMetal Gear Solidhelped shape the entire video game industry, so fans were understandably pleased when he began his own company, Kojima Productions.

“Unfortunately, due to the strike, and due to sort of everything that’s happening in our industry right now, I can’t say as much as I’d like to, other than there’s going to be some very exciting news coming up soon, and we’re incredibly excited about the direction that we’re taking it in,” Ungar continued. “I think it’s going to be an incredible surprise, not just for video game fans, but for moviegoing fans, and audiences in general, who I don’t think have seen anything quite like this before.”

Death Strandingbecame arguably one of the best post-apocalyptic gamesafter its release. It stars Norman Reedus as Sam Porter Bridges, a courier tasked with walking packages across the wasteland of the U.S.A. as deadly creatures and desperate bandits stand in his path every step of the way. Of course, for those familiar with Kojima’s work, it’s already a given that things aren’t that simple. The game’s engaging, star-studded cast of characters and its surreal story captivated players to the point where a movie seemed like the perfect idea so people could experience it without having to try wrangling its admittedly unorthodox gameplay.

Kojima has said that theDeath Strandingmovie will be different from the game, so its move to the big screen will surely be interesting. While the game also stars big names like Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Guillermo del Toro, it’s uncertain how much of that will translate to the movie. However it turns out, fans can rest easy knowing it’s still happening. There are sure to be hurdles, but the movie is still coming.
