Summary
CD Projekt Red could include a major feature inCyberpunk 2077’s eventual sequel, adding a third-person option that was missing from the original game. The decision to makeCyberpunk 2077first-person was made in large part to give the game its own identity, making it distinct from CD Projekt Red’sThe Witcherfranchise. But that doesn’t meanCyberpunk 2077 2also has to be restricted to first-person. A third-person camera hasn’t been ruled out.
It may surprise someCyberpunk 2077fans, but the now-first-person RPG was originally planned to feature a third-person camera. Development of the sci-fi game was tumultuous and constantly changing, all the way through its launch. In 2016, a decision was made toshiftCyberpunk 2077from third-person to first-person, abandoning features including wall-running and flying cars as a result. It’s interesting to consider what kind of gameCyberpunk 2077could have been if it stuck to that original third-person design.
As part of a presentation for CD Projekt Red’s Investor Day,Cyberpunk 2077quest director Paweł Saskowas asked if he’d consider bringing back third-person for the game’s eventual sequel. Sasko didn’t respond to the question directly, unwilling to confirm or deny the possibility. He did leave the door open, however, saying that CD Projekt Red is “yet to see” whetherCyberpunk 2077’s sequel will be first-person or not.
Alongside the question of whetherCyberpunk 2077’s sequel would support third-person gameplay, Sasko was also asked if the studio regretted making the original game first-person. Sasko then discussed some of the reasoning behind the decision and how first-person is core toCyberpunk 2077’s identity. He’d also say how first-person allowedCyberpunk 2077to stand apart fromThe Witcheras “this different thing,” and that it helped with reach since it’s “YouTube, Twitch, and screenshots that sell games.”
There are no plans to release aCyberpunk 2077sequel anytime soon, of course. CD Projekt Red is currently focused on anew game set inThe Witcheruniverse. Even that won’t arrive until at least 2025, however. ACyberpunk 2077sequel is planned, though, and will be developed at CD Projekt’s future North American location.
WhetherCyberpunk 2077would have been better in third-person isn’t an easy question to answer. Whether it makes sense for the sequel to support third-person is no simpler. It is true that third-person worked exceptionally well forThe Witcherfranchise and that it may have made development easier for CD Projekt Red if they had gone in that direction. But, ultimately,Cyberpunk 2077has delivered an exceptional modern first-person experience.
Cyberpunk 2077is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
