After wrapping up an incredibly well-received fourth season, the team behind Netflix’sCastlevaniais not resting on its laurels. The streamer has confirmed that a new spinoff will be heading into production starringRondo of Bloodduo Richter Belmont and Maria Renard.
Castlevania’s season four finalecame with heavy speculation that Netflix was considering the possibility of continuing to expand the series’ lore with one of the many other Belmonts from the franchise. However, instead of going with Trevor and Sypha’s direct descendant, Simon Belmont, they’ve chosen the couple’s great-great-great-grandson Richter as the new protagonist.

The creative direction of the newCastlevaniaseries will still be handled by Samuel and Adam Deats, although a new showrunner will step inafter Warren Ellis was droppedamidst a wave of sexual misconduct allegations. During Geeked Week’s final day stream, the team confirmed Richter and Maria’s adventures in 1792 France during the nation’s revolution, with Samuel Deats promptly correcting Netflix’s owned social media wizards after they mistakenly posted Richter was Trevor and Sypha’s son.
Richter and Maria starred in 1993’sCastlevania: Rondo of Blood, still widely considered today as one of the franchise’s finer entries from the era precedingSymphony of the Night. In that game’s original PC Engine Japanese release, Maria was seen as a sort of easy mode due to her enhanced mobility and double jumps, which were a stark contrast from Richter’s traditionally clunky Belmont movement.
Perhaps one of the reasons why the series producers chose to go with Richter and Maria was because of the kind of chemistry that could be developed between the couple, just as they did for Trevor and Sypha since the pair’s relationship was one of the highlights of the show, aside fromits masterfulCastlevaniagame to series adaptation. With at least a couple of hundred years gone by after fans last saw Trevor and Sypha, Dracula’s fate after quietly retiring with Lisa Tepes might define which route is taken for the plot.
It’s still fairly likely that Richter and Maria’s adventures could also borrow from several games, including their appearances inSymphony of the Night,Nocturne of Reflection, andHarmony of Despair. The news ofCastlevania’s return quickly started trending on Reddit alongsidesimilar announcements for the likes ofThe Witcher,Splinter Cell, and theLeague of Legends’Arcane, so it’s safe to say there’s plenty of excitement for more tales involving the Belmont family.
