Although fans have enjoyed a lot of the multiplayer modes on offer inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, the Gunfight mode has stood out as a clear favorite. When Infinity Ward announced that the O.S.P. (On Sight Procuration) variation (which appeared in the beta and not in the full game)would return in last week’s update, fans were initially excited, but it seems the fact that the mode isn’t optional didn’t sit well with everyone.
O.S.P.’s temporary replacement of Gunfightwas quickly met with backlash from the community. Earlier this week, Co-Design Director Joe Cecot confirmed that the original, non-OSP mode would indeed be returning, but following more complaints about its absence, Multiplayer Designer David Mickner echoed the confirmation.

In response to a complaint from streamer Ninja, Mickner claimed that Gunfight would return soon. Mickner’s response to Ninja triggered replies from other fans who believed it took someone of Ninja’s status to get communication on the topic, but Mickner assured them that wasn’t the case, reiterating that Gunfight was always scheduled to come back. He also hinted at the possibility ofa new Gunfight modecoming in the future, but the only detail he gave about it was “.”
While Gunfight starts players off with a predetermined selection of weapons, O.S.P. forces them to grab their weapons directly from the map. It puts an interesting spin on the game mode but also adds an inconsistency that takes away the competitive edge provided by the original. By allowing players to start with the same unaltered weapons from the very beginning, Gunfight (as the name implies) forces gunfights that rely mainly on skill. O.S.P., however, gives advantage to whoever grabs certain weapons first. The lack of any other factors aside outside of skill makes Gunfight the bestModern Warfaregame mode for many fans, and O.S.P. doesn’t quite live up to it.
While Infinity Ward did clarify that Gunfight would be returning, it would seem it could have avoided this situation by making O.S.P. optional from the start. Hopefully, the developer decides to implement this in the future whenever the new Gunfight game mode (or whatever it happens to be) releases. ConsideringSeason 1’s weekly release schedule and the fact that Gunfight should return on Wednesday of this week, it’s likely fans will find out what “” is on Christmas.
