ACall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2fan has gone through the painstaking task of matching all of the guns from the game with their real-world names. With around50 guns inModern Warfare 2at launch, the task of matching all the right guns had to be time-consuming.
TheCall of Dutyseries prides itself on making parts of the games look and sound as realistic as possible. From gun and vehicle sounds to entire cities likethe Amsterdam level inModern Warfare 2’scampaign, the developers want to make the game as immersive as possible. However, for some firearms aficionados, that immersion can be broken by the names Activision has to give the guns inCall of Dutythanks to legal paperwork. OneCall of Dutyfan has gone through the work of matching each gun in the game at launch to help fans pin down the inspiration for each weapon.

Redditor JaacobErazoYT made a list of the full names of the weapons inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. There is variety in the naming conventions of the guns. Most of them have wildly different names from their real-world counterparts. For example, the Lachmann-762 is called the G3, used mostly by European combat personnel, and the TACQ-56 is the SCAR-L rifle, used by American Special Forces soldiers. Some of them bear the caliber of ammunition like the STB 556, which would be the AUG A3 in the real world that uses 5.56mm caliber rounds. The names of some weapons inModern Warfare 2don’t stray far from their real-world counterparts: the names of the M4 and the M16 were shortened from M4A1 and M16A4 respectively.
Though finding official confirmation is complex, the reason the guns have different names in the games could be because of an industry-wide shift away from licensing deals with gun manufacturers. After a court ruling in 2013 involvingElectronic Arts and theMedal of Honorseries, video game companies began moving away from licensing deals with gun manufacturers. However, this only affects the naming of weapons and not the gun’s likeness.
In the grand scheme of things, the name of the gun is inconsequential to the game as a whole. What matters is that everything inModern Warfare 2looks good and works as intended. With the depth ofgunsmith customization inModern Warfare 2, some guns will end up looking completely different than their inspiration.
