This year’sTokyo Game Showran from September 15 until September 18, and it featured several exciting revelations from Japanese developers. Capcom had a notable presence, withResident Evil,Exoprimal, andStreet Fighterappearing. Bandai Namco was also around to give news onTekken. Developers from around the world also got a bit of the spotlight, including Arkane Studios, which revealedDeathloop’s update.
TheTokyo Game Showis one of the largest video game exhibitions in Asia, and it attracts eyes from all over the world due to the big announcements and reveals that occur at the annual event. In 2020 and 2021, the event had to go virtual due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, but this year it finally returned to an in-person show. The show did a good job illustrating all the exciting titles that players can look forward to from Eastern markets.

Capcom’s Announcements
The studio also has the upcomingthird-person shooter,Exoprimal,which will have gamers fighting against hordes of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. The game received a new trailer at the show, and it let fans know that it will be quite an action-packed title. It is expected to release in 2023 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Resident Evil 8also made an appearance, with Capcom showing off a little more of theWinters' ExpansionDLC that will release in October. The expansion will conclude the Winters family saga with theShadows of RoseDLC, and it will also introduce third-person perspective gameplay, allowing players to experience the horror in a new way.Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreakwill also be getting an update on September 29, bringing three new monsters as well as unlockable layered weapons.
Bandai Namco’s News
Gamers were shownTekken 8during the recent Sony State of Play event, and it sported gorgeous current-generation graphics. During the Tokyo Game Show, fans learned even more about the upcoming game. Series lead Katsuhiro Harada had a lengthy interview with IGN detailing howTekken 8is a turning point for the franchise. Harada also revealed his excitement regarding the series' shift to Unreal Engine 5, and how it will allow them to push console hardware in new ways. The upcoming game will feature an intense showdown between Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, and gamers will be able to play it on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.One Piece Odysseyis an upcoming RPG being developed by ILCA. It was originally slated for a 2022 release, however, at the Tokyo Game Show, it was revealed that the game will hit shelves on Jul 20, 2025.

Sega’s Big Reveals
RGG Studio revealed that theYakuzaseries will now be calledLike a Dragon,which is the name it has gone by in Japan for a while. According to Sega, the name change was done to maintain uniformity within the franchise in both Western and Japanese markets. It was also announced that two new entries were on the way:Like a Dragon 8, a spin-off starring Kazuma Kiryu, and anIshin!remake.
Sonic Frontiersalso made an appearance. Past trailers have drawn mixed reception, though what was shown at the Tokyo Game Show was quite enticing. Super Sonic will be used more frequently in the open zones that will make up the gameplay areas. Gamers can expect the game this year on November 8 on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.
Announcements from Western Studios
Although Japanese studios predictably dominated the show, a few Western studios also made appearances. Quantic Dreams CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere spoke to IGN Japan during the event, revealing a bit more about the studio’s upcomingStar Warstitle. While the game will contain action elements, it will also feature the branching narratives and player decision-making that Quantic Dreams is known for.
After a period of exclusivity on PlayStation,Deathloophas made its way to Xbox. At Tokyo Game Show, it was also revealed thatDeathloopwill be receiving the Goldenloop Updatewhich extends the game’s ending, adds new enemy types, a new weapon, a new ability, and more. The update is available for free on all platforms.
The Rest of the Big Announcements
There were other noteworthy announcements from other studios, including Konami which revealed thatSuikoden 3andSuikoden 2will be receiving HD remasters next year on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Team Ninja, which is responsible forNioh, unveiled agameplay trailer ofWo Long: Fallen Dynastyand a demo of the game is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Indie developer Taner Games showed off a trailer for its upcoming gameThe Awakener: Risen, which will be available on PlayStation and PC in 2023.
Following a heap of delays in 2022, it appears that next year will be one filled with headlining releases from around the world. Longtime franchises likeStreet Fighter 6will receive new entries, while new IPs likeExoprimalwill have the opportunity to break new ground. It doesn’t mean that this year is void of any releases though, as gamers can enjoyDeathloop’s update and look forward toResident Evil 8’s DLC. Japan has always been a gaming hub, and this year’sTokyo Game Showproved that it will continue being a powerhouse in the industry for many more years to come.
